Sanford police seek witnesses to Sunday fire

SANFORD — Police here are looking for anyone who might have  witnessed a small fire at Family Dollar store at Sanford’s Mid-Town mall on Main Street Sunday night.

Sanford Police Det. Sgt. Matthew Jones said a small bundle of napkins located on an end stand near the rear of the store had  been lit on fire. The store was successfully evacuated and no injuries were reported.

Clerks at the store called 911 at about 5:42 p.m. when they saw heavy smoke at the back of the store, he said. The Sanford Fire Department and police responded.

Jones said several patrons were in and around the store at the time. Police are requesting the public’s help in identifying potential witnesses to the incident. Anyone in the store at the time is asked to call Sanford Police

Department at 324-9170, ext. 223 and ask to speak with Det. Chad Allen.

The fire is under investigation, and detectives are working with the office of the State Fire Marshal.
