Student says man racially harassed her

PORTLAND (AP) — The University of Southern Maine says it’s prepared to press criminal charges against a man accused of racially harassed a student at the library last week.

The school said in a statement Monday on its Facebook page that the man will be issued a criminal trespass citation if he tries to re-enter the library. He is not a student.

Nimco Mohamed posted on Facebook that she was in the Glickman Library Friday when a man approached her and started using profanity and racial slurs. She says he also told her to go back to her country.

Nimco tells WMTW-TV the school falls short on creating safe spaces for its marginalized students.

School officials say USM acted in a manner focused on protecting her safety.
