SHELLEY WIGGLESWORTH PHOTO ARUNDEL — Ninetynine year-old Lola Matteau said she was “happy to be home again” to celebrate her birthday at Bentley’s Saloon in Arundel – a tradition she began nine years ago and has no plans on stopping any time soon.

Affectionately referred to as “the queen of Bentley’s,” Matteau is not your stereotypical senior citizen. She’s still riding on the back of motorcycles, wears a leather bustier on occasion and can out-dance most people half her age.

Steve Roscia of Wells has been to every one of Lola’s birthday parties at the saloon. “She’s an amazing lady. She’s full of energy, she never changes, and she never forgets anyone.”

Bentley Warren and Lisa Zatalava of Bentley’s Saloon pay for Matteau to fly home to celebrate her birthday at the saloon each year. “We do it because we love her! She’s a true inspiration to all of us and has a heart of gold as anyone that knows Lola will agree,” Zatalava said.

“Lola is more than a good friend to all of us,” Mary Neault said. “She is like an angel to me and to so many others.”

Birthday guests danced the Sunday afternoon away to Matteau’s favorite band, Saxx Roxx, from 1-5 p.m., stopping to hug and pose for pictures with the guest of honor in between.

Matteau opened up gifts between dancing under a Harley-Davidson suspended from the ceiling with a “Happy Birthday Lola” banner and a pink bra signed by guests at a previous birthday bash attached.

“It’s a beautiful thing to see her so happy and enjoying life,” birthday guest Linda Fernald said.

Matteau said long life “runs in her family,” as her own mother lived to be 102 years old. “God willing, I will be back here for my 100th birthday next year, and for even more after that. I’m very thankful to be home and even more thankful for all of these wonderful friends to celebrate with, I am truly blessed,” Matteau said.
