Elizabeth DeWolfe, professor of history at the University of New England, will speak about Shakers Mary and Joseph Dyer at the next meeting of the Waterborough Historical Society. Their early 19th Century he-said, she-said dispute became public, and the fallout was felt among both Shakers and non-Shakers.

The program will be held at the air conditioned Grange Hall, 31 West Road, South Waterboro at 7 p.m. The public is invited and refreshments will be served. For more information, call Jim Carll at 247-5878.

“Back to School” silent art auction and cocktail party at the Colony Hotel will be held from 5-7 p.m with music by Rob Spaulding. Cost is $25 per person. All proceeds go to Friends of the Town House School. The aim of the organization is to save the last existing school house in Kennebunkport.

Down East’s 3rd annual Art of Giving Gala will take place from 6–9 p.m. at the Landing at Pine Point Road, Scarborough. Attendees have a chance to go home with more than $10,000 worth of Maine-made art. Tickets are $75-100 per person and are available online through artofgiving2016.brownpapertickets.com. One hundred percent of the net proceeds from ticket sales will go directly to four Maine charities selected by each of the four artists who have donated their works to be raffled off during the event. Those charities include: LifeFlight of Maine, Harbor House Community Service Center, Maine Farmland Trust and Community Partners.
