Biddeford sex offender arrested

BIDDEFORD — A Biddeford man remained at York County Jail this morning for allegedly failing to register as a sex offender.

Maine State Police posted on its Facebook page Saturday that Clifford Mason, 30, of Biddeford, was arrested downtown Friday on a nationwide extraditable warrant for failing to register as a sex offender based on a previous conviction for sexual abuse of a minor.

Sgt. Jeremy Forbes with the state police reportedly observed Mason drinking from an open bottle of Fireball whiskey on Jefferson Street at about 4:22 p.m. Friday. Mason fled when confronted, police said, but was later apprehended behind a trash dumpster on Elm Street.

Police say Mason attempted to kick out the windows of the officer’s cruiser, and that assistance from the Biddeford Police Department was required to transport him to the county jail in Alfred.

In addition to failing to register as a sex offender, Mason was also charged with refusing to submit to arrest, disorderly conduct and violating release conditions.

He is being held at York County Jail on $1,250 bail, and is expected to be video arraigned today.
