LIMERICK — A single vehicle crash on Burnham Road off Route 5 claimed the life of a 19-year-old local man this morning.

Austyn Pfeiffer was pronounced dead at the scene. Pfeiffer was a 2015 graduate of Massabesic High School and a member of the varsity soccer team.

The crash took place at about 7:30 a.m. near 150 Burnham Road. York County Sheriff Bill King said Pfieffer was a passenger in a 2001 Ford Focus traveling east on Burnham Road when the driver, Caleb Washburn, 20, lost control and struck a utility pole. The force of the crash snapped the pole in half, and utility wires were strewn across the roadway.

“The vehicle careened off the utility pole and rolled over, coming to rest on the opposite side of the road, on its roof,” said the sheriff in a statement. Both men were ejected from the car.

Neither men were wearing safety belts, according to police.

Washburn was transported to the Maine Medical Center  in Portland with shoulder and leg injuries.

King said the preliminary investigation indicates that speed was a factor. The crash is being reconstructed, and the investigation will continue.

The road was closed to traffic for three hours while CMP workers removed the wires and replaced the pole.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
