Waterboro voters reject fire station addition

WATERBORO — Voters here rejected a $2 million referendum that would have seen renovations and an addition to Waterboro Fire 7 Rescue’s Central Station.

Voters rejected the proposal 2,166-1,742.

The ballot question asked voters if they wish to spend up to $2 million to renovate the 16-year-old fire station that municipal officials say was never built with future needs of the department in mind.

The proposal would have added two equipment bays, provided more storage, sleeping accommodations at ground level for overnight staff, a meeting room that could be closed off from the rest of the building, adequate bathroom and showering facilities and more functional administrative offices.

It also would have brought public water to the facility.
