Grant boosts school's aquaponics program

Tyler Fortier of VOYA Financial's Unsung Heroes grant program visited Lafayette School last month to present a check for $2,000 to third-grade teachers, Cristy Crowley and Karen Kantolak, and their former second-grade colleague, Sherri Baron. Last spring these teachers worked with technology specialist, Deb Rosa to write a grant to support their focus on reducing, reusing and recycling at Lafayette School. They wanted to extent this focus by learning about aquaponics and doing small scale aquaponics gardening in school.  The money provided by the grant will purchase the tanks and supplies for this project. Baron is now at Carl Lamb School teaching second grade classes and will Suse kype together to compare notes and ideas for the project. The classes are also in hopes of working with junior and high school  students already doing aquaponics farming in their schools.  This will be a very informative project and one that the teachers hope helps to teach our children that we can become even more eco-friendly, said principal Sharom Remick.  Submitted Photo
