Castleton starts quick, downs USM

FROM STAFF REPORTS

GORHAM — The visiting Castleton University Spartans scored seven first-quarter goals en route to a 15-7 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference game Friday afternoon at snow-covered Hannaford Field.

The victory evened the Spartans overall record at 3-3 heading into tomorrow afternoon’s (1:00 p.m.) North Atlantic Conference opener at Maine Maritime Academy.  The Huskies had their two-game win streak snapped to fall back to .500 at 2-2 overall.

Playing in a steady wet snow throughout the game, the Spartans grabbed the lead on the first of junior Sam Siegel’s (Brattleboro, Vt.) five goals just 2:30 into the first quarter and never trailed in the game. Siegel finished with a game-high eight points on five goals and three assists.  Senior Louis Alhage (New Milford, Conn.) added a goal and five assists for a six-point day, and sophomore Jason Sedell (Pine Brook, N.J.) tallied a hat trick.  Overall, eight different Spartans scored at least one goal.

Rookie Bryce Randall (Portland, Maine/Deering) led the Huskies scoring three goals. Junior Caleb Dolloff (Gorham, Maine) contributed a goal and an assist for the home side.
