Roger Williams rallies for win over UNE

BIDDEFORD — Roger Williams University outscored the University of New England 10-2 in the second half to erase a four-goal halftime deficit and earn an 11-7 Commonwealth Coast Conference women’s lacrosse win Saturday afternoon (Apr. 22) on UNE’s Senior Day at the Big Blue Turf.

The Hawks won their sixth consecutive contest to improve to 11-3 overall and clinch second place in the conference standings with a 6-1 mark. UNE (8-7, 5-2) slipped to third in the CCC after the setback.

Emily Stoeppel was one of the catalysts in the Hawks’ comeback, tallying all of her game-high four goals after halftime. Ashley Warren finished with a pair of markers, as did McKenna Everding. Warren added a pair of assists to finish the match with four points.

Korinne Bohunsky and Jocelyn Davee scored two goals apiece to pace the UNE attack.

The first half was dominated by UNE. The Nor’easters held the visitors scoreless for nearly 27 minutes to build a 5-0 advantage. Everding would score late in the frame to get Roger Williams on the board before intermission.

After the two squads each scored twice over the initial 13:33 of the second half, the Hawks would go on an 8-0 run to close the match. Stoeppel had half of Roger Williams’ goal total during that spurt, including three consecutive goals over a span of 1:10 to kick it off.

RWU goalkeeper Kimberly Bolk figured prominently in the win, making 11 of her 16 saves in the opening half to keep the Hawks within striking distance. Caitlin Shanahan contributed four ground balls and four caused turnovers to the win.

Maritza Nary finished with 12 stops in goal for UNE. Bohunsky totaled a match-high six ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Jolena Lampron finished with five ground ball pickups, four caused turnovers and three draw controls.

The regular season will conclude for each team Tuesday. Roger Williams hosts Wentworth Institute of Technology and UNE travels to Curry College.
