Sea Dogs split with Rumble Ponies


BINGHAMPTON, NY — The Portland Sea Dogs (24-28) split a doubleheader with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (31-20) on Saturday night, dropping the opener 5-1, but rebounding for a 2-0 win in the nightcap.

Game 1 recap

Binghamton scored four times in the first inning and never looked back, beating the Sea Dogs 5-1. RHP Seth Lugo (1-1) on a MLB Rehab Assignment from the New York Mets, earned the win for Binghamton.

Travis Lakins (L, 0-3) suffered the loss for Portland, giving up 10 hits and 5 runs over 4 plus innings.

Trailing 5-0 in the fourth inning, Rafael Devers (2-for-3) hit a long homer to left field, his 10th of the season, but his sixth with two strikes.

Tomas Nido ignited the scoring for the Rumble Ponies, hitting a two-run homer (No. 4) in the first. Gustavo Nunez capped off the four-run frame with a two-run single. David Thompson nailed a two-out RBI double in the second.

Lefty Bobby Poyner made his Double-A debut for Portland and retired all six batters, picking up four strikeouts.

Game 2 recap

Jacob Dahlstrand (4-1) worked five scoreless innings and Jeremy Barfield hit a two-run homer (No. 4) in the sixth, leading the Sea Dogs to a 2-0 win over the Rumble Ponies in the nightcap.

Dahlstrand scattered four hits, three walks and two strikeouts, earning his fourth win of the season. Josh Smith pitched the final two innings for his first save in the Red Sox system.

Barfield hit his fourth homer in just 44 at-bats since joining the Sea Dogs from the Sugar Land Skeeters. 

Josh Tobias went 2-for-3 and Mike Olt walked three times.

Portland and Binghamton wrap-up their four-game series on Sunday afternoon with a 1:05 PM first pitch at NYSEG Stadium. Portland does not have their starter listed for Sunday, the Rumble Ponies have RHP Donovan Hand (3-1, 3.02) on the hill.
