TA advances to conference finals

SACO — The No. 1 seeded Thornton Academy girls tennis team topped visiting Scarborough 3-2 in the Class A South semifinals on Saturday afternoon.

In a match that took over four hours, the Trojans punched their ticket to the conference finals at Bates College.

The Trojans improved their overall record this year to 14-0, and continue to impress as the program shoots for its first-ever state title win. 

Eva Sachs remained undefeated as TA’s top singles player, beating Scarborough’s Ashley Levesque 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in a tough match. Emma Nassif would later drop her match to Scarborough’s Maureen Degrinny 5-7, 2-6.

TA’s third singles player Brianna Paul would then grind out a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Abby Ricker   to give the Trojans the 2-1 lead heading into the doubles portion of the match.

TA’s Cordelia Perry and Katie Shedd continued to impress at first doubles, taking a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Kacey Forester and Grace Degrinney to secure the narrow win. Scarborough’s Amelia Hardy and Caelyn Sheil then topped Ky Nguyen and Yawen Lin to push the score to 3-2.

Thornton looks ahead to the conference finals, where they will face southern powerhouse Falmouth on Thursday. On the boys side, the Trojans will also take on Falmouth at the same time and location at Bates. The boys also carry a perfect 14-0 record into the finals.
