Age Friendly Saco launches Handyman Program

SACO — Age Friendly Saco is launching their Handyman Program throughout Saco in an effort to help residents ages 55 and older better adapt to aging in their community. Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution recently donated $4,000 to help fund this new program.

A recent survey of Saco residents ages 55 and older found that the needs for this age group were enhanced resources and aid in adapting their home while they age. Age Friendly’s Handyman Program will assist residents in making their homes more accessible through services such as installing wheelchair ramps and installing shower bars. The group will also create a resource guide for residences.

“We are sharing resources between Biddeford and Saco and are interested in partnering with various community organizations to grow the program,” said Jean Saunders, Community Volunteer. “We are so fortunate to have such a supportive organization like Saco and Biddeford Savings supporting Age Friendly Saco.”

SBSI officials were glad to lend a hand.

“Saco and Biddeford Savings recognizes the need for more resources in our communities for seniors and are happy to support the development of this program,” said SBSI Executive Vice President, Marc Gagnon.

In the future, Age Friendly Saco plans to expand their assistance to include risk assessments and wellness checks, as well as develop a solid volunteer base.

Age Friendly Saco promotes active aging by optimizing opportunities for health, engagement and safety, while removing barriers that prevent citizens from remaining in their homes as they age.
