Veterans Day observances set for Saturday

YORK COUNTY — Residents in several York County communities will pause to observe Veterans Day on Saturday.

Most observances will be conducted Saturday morning — traditionally close to 11 a.m., the time World War I officially ended on Nov. 11, 1918.

• Biddeford and Saco will acknowledge the sacrifices of the men and women who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces with a ceremony at 9:45 a.m. at Biddeford’s Veterans Memorial Park, followed by a parade at 10 a.m. from Biddeford across the bridge into Saco, up to Saco’s Main Street, then right on Beach Street, ending at Burns School.

The opening ceremony will feature a speech by Retired Colonel Jen Fullmer, who retired in 2015 from the US Air Force after spending 24 years serving in a variety of leadership positions, including B-1 squadron command, chief of staff of the Joint Interagency Task Force South, and vice commander of the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, where she was second in command of United States Central Command’s largest air wing.

• The Old Orchard Beach Memorial Park Committee will host a flag ceremony at Veteran's Memorial Park at 11:11 a.m.

• In Sanford, wreaths will be placed in Central Park at 9 a.m. followed by a wreath placement at the gazebo in Springvale. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. for 11 a.m. ceremonies at Sanford Veterans Memorial Gymnasium  on Main Street.

• At Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery, Stanley Road, Springvale, area Masonic lodges will host a Veterans Day Observance Ceremony across from the administration building, near the flags. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m., with Military Honors scheduled for 11 a.m.
