WATERBORO — A Wells man was killed instantly when he was struck by a tree limb while riding his motorcycle Sunday afternoon on Route 5.

Dwight Noble, 66, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after noon.

According to York County Sheriff’s Lt. Gary Fecteau, Noble was traveling south from the Limerick area with five other motorcyclists when a dead tree limb snapped and crashed down on him.

The incident took place on Route 5 between Chadbourne’s Ridge and Silas Brown roads, Fecteau said.

Route 5 was closed for several hours following the crash.

Fecteau said Noble was not wearing a helmet. Adults are not required to wear helmets under Maine law.

Noble’s death marks the second motorcycle fatality in York County in as many weeks. On July 10, Alan Morin, 50, of Steep Falls, was killed on Route 202 in Sanford when he was struck from behind by a van.

Morin was operating a 2004 Suzuki motorcycle on Cottage Street (Route 202) near Grammar Road, and slowed to make a left turn when he was struck from behind, Sanford Police said. The impact caused the victim and the motorcycle to skid an estimated 60 feet. Morin later died in a hospital.

Kimberly S. Gignac, 25, who has a lengthy driving record, has been arrested and charged by police with one felony count of leaving the scene of an accident causing injury or death in connection with the Sanford crash.

On July 11, a North Berwick man was injured when he crashed his motorcycle on Route 4 in Sanford, and on July 3, a Waterboro couple sustained injuries when their motorcycle hit a deer on Route 202.
