LEWISTON – The girls’ tennis singles state tournament continues to be dominated by Brunswick’s Maisie Silverman and Falmouth’s team. As for the boys’ tournament, well, that’s following a familiar pattern, too.
For the second year in a row, Silverman will be joined in the semifinals by three Falmouth players — Olivia Leavitt, Julia Brogan and Libby Voccola. That quartet each won third- and fourth-round matches Monday at Bates College, advancing to the semifinals Wednesday, also at Bates.

Meanwhile, the top four seeds in the boys’ draw all advanced with a pair of straight-set victories, led by defending champion Jordan Friedland of Lincoln Academy. Waynflete senior Patrick Ordway, the 2011 champion, reached the final four for the fourth time, Matt Gilman of Cape Elizabeth made it for the third straight year, and No. 2 seed Brendan McCarthy of Falmouth advanced with a quarterfinal victory over a rival who knocked him out of the tournament a year ago — No. 7 seed Satchel McCarthy of Cape Elizabeth.
Silverman, last year’s champion, and Leavitt, the No. 2 seed, each lost a total of two games in their two matches Monday. Brogan and Voccola, on the other hand, both survived tight quarterfinal matches. Brogan, seeded fifth, outlasted No. 4 seed Tiffany Suchanek of Waterville, 7-5, 1-6, 6-3. Voccola, the No. 6 seed, also knocked off a Waterville opponent, No. 3 seed Colleen O’Donnell, 7-6 (3), 6-3.
The best match of the day was between No. 6 Peter Higgins of Cape Elizabeth and No. 11 Burke Paxton of North Yarmouth Academy in the third round. Paxton won in about three hours, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (3), 6-4, but lost to Ordway in the quarterfinals.
In the girls’ semifinals, Silverman will face Brogan and Leavitt will play Voccola. The boys’ semifinal matchups are Friedland vs. Gilman and McCarthy vs. Ordway.
Semifinal matches are schedule to begin at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, followed by the finals at 1:30 p.m.
