PORTLAND – Residents from three communities lodged complaints about loud noise and objectionable language coming from an outdoor concert on the Portland waterfront Wednesday night.
Nicole Clegg, the city of Portland’s spokeswoman, said the city received more than 50 noise complaints related to a performance by hip-hop artist Kendrick Lamar at the Ocean Gateway Terminal.

Though loud noise was the chief concern, a few people objected to the language Lamar used.
“It was hip-hop and the language got a little colorful,” Clegg said.
Clegg said most of the complaints came from residents of Portland and South Portland, but a Falmouth police dispatcher said his town got several complaints about loud noises as well.
“The weather can affect things. A low cloud cover compresses the sound so that it spreads out to a much wider area,” Clegg said.
Despite the weather, Clegg said the city enforced a 9 p.m. curfew – the concert ended around 8:40 p.m. and took decibel readings throughout the concert. At no point did Lamar exceed noise levels, she said.
The “On the Waterfront at Ocean Gateway” concert – the first of the season – generated about $13,000 in revenues for the city. About 2,500 people attended the concert.
