Jeff Merrill II has been named superintendent of the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland, the Maine Department of Corrections announced Friday.

Merrill has 23 years of corrections experience, serving most recently as acting superintendent at Long Creek, according to a news release.

He has a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Colby College and additional training through the Maine Criminal Justice Academy and the Maine State Prison.

Merrill is well-versed in corrections’ security, operations  and programming, said Associate Corrections Commissioner Joseph Fitzpatrick. He also has a successful track record working with community agencies, including as a program director for Volunteers of America, Fitzpatrick said.
