BASS HARBOR — Maine lobstermen are revving their engines for another day of lobster boat races.
The season’s third set of races takes place Sunday in Bass Harbor, on Mount Desert Island. In all, about a dozen races are scheduled through the summer along Maine’s coast.
Lobstermen each summer race their boats in fishing ports along the Maine coast for cash, prizes and bragging rights. The fastest of the souped-up boats race at speeds that can reach 60 mph or more in front of crowds that line the shores and watch from boats that crowd the race courses.
The season kicked off last weekend with races in Boothbay Harbor and Rockland.
