U.S. beats Sweden, wins junior hockey world title

The United States won the junior ice hockey championships on Saturday after Rocco Grimaldi scored twice and Vince Trocheck added an empty-net goal to clinch a 3-1 win over Sweden in the final at Ufa, Russia. It was the third title for the Americans, who also won in 2004 and 2010.

Earlier, Valeri Nichushkin scored an overtime winner to give Russia a 6-5 victory over Canada in the bronze-medal match. It was the first time since 1998 that 15-time champion Canada finished without a medal at the event.

LUGE

WORLD CUP: In women’s luge racing at Koenigssee, Germany, Natalie Geisenberger was fastest in both runs to lead a German sweep of the top three positions.

Geisenberger clocked 1:42.325 to finish ahead of Carina Schwab and Aileen Frisch. Canada’s Alex Gough was fourth.

The top American was Julia Clukey, of Augusta, who finished in sixth place.

“My first run was really good, but I had some issues in the second,” said Clukey, who is returning to form after injuries and surgeries. “I haven’t thought about my back or neck or the surgeries. It’s no longer a thought in my head. I’m strong. I’m back lifting.”

QATAR OPEN: Richard Gasquet won at Doha, Qatar, for his eight career title on Saturday, coming from a set down to beat Nikolay Davydenko.

BRISBANE INTERATIONAL: Serena Williams captured her 47th career title with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova at Brisbane, Australia.

HOPMAN CUP: Spain defeated Serbia 2-1 at Perth, Australia, to win the Hopman Cup for the fourth time.

Fernando Verdasco and Anabel Medina Garrigues won the deciding mixed doubles 6-4, 7-5 against Novak Djokovic and Ana Ivanovic.

SOCCER

EUROPE: Demba Ba scored twice in his debut as Chelsea got off to a perfect start in its FA Cup defense with a 5-1 rout of Southampton in the third round, while Robin van Persie scored an injury-time tying goal for Manchester United to tie 2-2 at West Ham and earn a replay.

GOLF

TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS: For the second straight day at Kapalua, Hawaii, the tournament was postponed because of gusts topping 40 mph that made it impossible to play. Some holes on the back nine are so exposed that when officials dropped a golf ball on the green, it actually rolled up uphill.

BASEBALL

MLB: A person familiar with the situation says the Texas Rangers are close to a deal with Lance Berkman, 36, to be their designated hitter.

Multiple reports, all citing unidentified sources, said it would be a one-year deal worth at least $10 million.

• The Chicago Cubs are reportedly closing in on a deal with left-hander Dontrelle Willis. Willis was the NL Rookie of the Year when he won 14 games for the Marlins in 2003, then went 22-10 in 2005. He hasn’t, however, come close to replicating those numbers since.
